My Black ASL Project 2014

 

My Black ASL Project is a clear remediation of the original Black ASL Project presented in 2003. I've decided to remediate this project to (1)connect to my interests and explain what drew me to the topic (2) talk about the primary source (The Black ASL Project) for a non-deaf or hearing audience (3) explain the history of Black ASL through a hearing lens & (4) learn that there are things I don't know about different black cultures in America. 

 

My investment in this project is

 

showcasing how I've organized already useful information for a hearing audience, how I've expressed my connection to the deaf culture through my American Sign Language class, and how I've been able to make multiple projects through this lens (Minor In Writing Capstone Portfolio & Gabon Portfolio). 

 

I am reaching out to: 

 

the hearing community (people who do not speak sign language through their native tongue) because I think it's important to acknowledge under-represented communities, especially those of multicultural lineage. I also think that the hearing community will be able to understand that ASL is not a universal language, is not a nation-wide language, and does have a variety of different languages depending on the regional location, education, and historical construct of the race. They will hopefully be able to understand this more through my projected website as well as resources I've placed throughout the wensite for further references.

 

When people walk away from my project I want them to be able to

 

1. Understand that ASL has a variety of langauges within its broader community

2. Differentiate the varieties of Black ASL from ASL (White/American Sign Language)

3. Know that as writers, we invest our writing in different contexts that are exciting to us

4. Be able to have a conversation about the historical construct of Black ASL through a hearing lens
